Happy Friday New Coasters!
Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow Saturday, February 23rd, New Coast Studios will be hosting local sketch artist Suhita Shirodkar for a special one day trunk show. Suhita’s work will be available for sale in the form of standalone, matted, and framed prints. Suhita will also be demonstrating her talents live in our studio from 12pm – 2pm, and will be available to answer any questions you have. We’ve been fans of Suhita’s work for a while now so it’s a great pleasure to collaborate with her on this one day event.
We asked Suhita if she could share some insights into her process and this is what she shared.
“My body of work varies widely in subject, but it all ties back to a single, underlying aim: to view and capture the world around me as a traveller would, to see both the everyday and exotic with wonder, and to look deeply at both the old and the new. So whether I’m capturing a moment of calm on the banks of a river in a faraway land, the crazy energy of a ferris wheel ride, or a child bent over an iPhone, lost in the world, I try to get to the heart of the moment, and to quickly, almost calligraphically, capture its essence.”
” I work very quickly, and I sketch anywhere. My whole studio is always on my shoulder: my bag with a couple of sketchbooks, pen and ink, a tiny watercolor kit and some brushes. Some of my works take just a few minutes to create, others a couple of hours, but never longer. I work almost exclusively on location because I believe it brings immediacy to my work. I like my work to be accessible and not too precious, something almost anyone can relate to. I also like the fact that my medium challenges the notion that a sketchbook is just a repository of ideas that go on to become artworks: in my world, that first-person experience, captured on location is the final piece itself.”
Suhita’s work inspires the ability to find the beauty in the everyday, and embodies the joy of appreciating life’s little moments. We hope you can join us, as we’re sure it will be a great way to start your weekend.
See you there!
